BUZZ SALON
IOWA CITY, IOWA
Located in the Park@201 building, the 1,700 square foot salon houses its retail component on street level and elevates the styling functions to the mezzanine level above. The mezzanine serves as a stage for customers and pedestrians alike to enjoy the artistic, club-like atmosphere the salon prides itself on. A custom designed, counterweighted, vertical gate separates the building’s main lobby and the salon’s reception area. 2016 IIDA AWARD
VELVET COAT
IOWA CITY, IOWA
Located on Iowa City’s busy pedestrian mall, this boutique clothing store occupies the main storefront of a rehabilitated historic building, which also houses an art gallery and independent cinema. Floor-to-ceiling glass provides a physical separation between tenants, but allows for light to be shared between interior spaces. A mix of original materials, including brick, hardwood flooring, and tin ceilings have been exposed and celebrated.
HOTEL VETRO
IOWA CITY, IOWA
The mid-rise boutique hotel targets long-term corporate guests. In addition to 56 guest rooms, the facility also provides 15,000 sf of conference space, with a variety of meeting rooms available. These spaces are divided by moveable frosted glass partitions which can be manipulated to create a variety of event spaces. Guest rooms can easily be converted into studio apartments, depending on market demand.
BLUE MOON DUELING PIANO BAR
WEST DES MOINES, IOWA
Located within a suburban mixed-use development, this building was designed to integrate indoors with outdoors. Maximizing lifespan and flexibility were important considerations should a change of tenants occur. Exterior materials are simple and create a warm and tactile, yet strikingly modern aesthetic. Prior to joining Neumann Monson, Channing Swanson acted as Project Architect for the project. (Firm of Record: Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck)
FILM SCENE
IOWA CITY, IOWA
This 85-seat cinema is situated within the core of a recently renovated mixed-use building in the heart of downtown. The cinema provides an intimate lobby/ lounge space for ticketing and concessions, which encourages movie-goers to mingle before and after showings. The two-story volume of the lobby terminates at a double skylight that provides natural daylight throughout the compact space.
JOSEPH'S STEAKHOUSE
IOWA CITY, IOWA
The project’s goal was to transform an existing casual restaurant into a unique, high-end dining destination. Glass and mahogany partitions divide the existing volume into three dining chambers. Further division and privacy can be achieved with sheer draperies.
KALONA BREWING COMPANY
KALONA, IOWA
This 4,000 sf brewery-restaurant occupies a historic building in a quaint village. The restaurant component is located to the south, while the brewery, kitchen, and service elements occupy the north end. A blackened steel bar with a walnut face is the restaurant’s centerpiece. Local barn board is used to create a ceiling plane that extends from the bar beyond the entrance, forming a canopy. (In collaboration with: Sam Brewer Design)
STEVEN VAIL GALLERY
IOWA CITY, IOWA
This intimate gallery is one of three commercial tenants located on the first floor of a recently renovated mixed-use building. The public face of the gallery is an uninterrupted wall of glass that allows visitors to view artwork while the gallery is closed, and guides them in when the integrated, glass gallery doors are opened. Within, a “floating wall” provides an elegant mounting surface to showcase current collections.
